Abstract

When we ask how Ukraine arrived at its present catastrophe, the first question should be: which Ukraine are we talking about? The war has been lived through in radically different ways. For some Ukrainians, it has meant death, dispossession, exile. For others, it has meant career breakthroughs, political projects suddenly feasible, or access to new resources and sources of income. Ukraine is not and has never been a single subject, but a mosaic of diverse and diverging fates.
